About this tour

Zagora, which gets its name from the mountain that borders it, was formerly called “Tazagourt” (⊰⊳⁓⁔⁜), the singular form of the plural “Tizigirt” (⁉⁔⁜), which means “twin peaks” and refers to the Murabitun, or Almoravid, people’s fortress. The mountain Zagora was already noted on early European maps, but the town was not founded until the 20th century. At the summit of Zagora mountain are still the remnants of an Almoravid fortress.[1] There is disagreement over the precise location of the former Almoravid mosque.

The Sufi saint Moulay Abdelkader Jilali’s moussem (festival) is held in Zagora once a year. The languages that are spoken in the city are Tachelhit, Tamazight, and Moroccan Arabic. A town boundary sign reads “Tombouctou 52 days,” which is the estimated amount of time it takes to travel by camel or foot to Timbuktu, Mali. A mural painting has taken the place of the original sign.

Itinerary

Set out on a desert day trip to Zagora from Ouarzazate, beginning with a 9:00 AM hotel pickup. Travel southeast to the oasis of Adz. A visit to Kasbah Tamnougalt, formerly the chief of the local tribe, is highly recommended. It's interesting to note that Brad Pitt used it as a filming location for "Babel." Over a cup of mint tea and some fresh dates, converse with the locals about their cultures.

Proceed down the picturesque Draa River, lined with Kasbahs, fortified settlements, and an abundance of date palm trees. Enjoy an optional one-hour walk through the palmeraie, where you can see people tending to their crops and herding their livestock under the shade of lemon, almond, olive, and palm trees. The exploration ends in the historic Jewish neighborhood of Amezrou, where Arabs, Berbers, and Haratines live side by side and continue customs brought over from the Jewish community's immigration a century ago, especially in the making of silver jewelry.
