Set out from Marrakech to explore the stunning beauty of the Sahara Desert in Morocco. Enjoy a picturesque drive through the verdant oases of the Draa Valley. At 7:30 AM, your Marrakech to Merzouga Morocco Desert Trip departs from your hotel or riad. With multiple stops along the way, the route takes you through the High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi Ntichka Pass to Ouarzazate. . The journey continues to Ouarzazate, stopping frequently for pictures and to take in the scenery. We take a quick cultural detour to the Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate before lunch.
The journey continues in the afternoon when we head to Boumalne Dades, stopping along the way to see the gorgeous Valley of the Roses and ending up at your charming hotel hidden away in the Dades Valley, Qelaa Megouna or Tinghir. Dinner and overnight are here.
We will leave for the Tinghir oasis after breakfast and travel the Road of 1001 Kasbahs. Admire the ruins of fortified villages that were home to caravan routes up until the early 20th century as we travel through. Once we arrive at Tinghir, which was a military post during the French occupation, we will turn off onto a side road that leads to the oasis. You are welcome to take a walk along the stream and keep an eye the locals working on their farms and herding cattle. Todgha Gorges, one of the tour's highlights, is where this walk ends. Following a filling lunch at a neighborhood café, we travel to Rissani, a historically significant town in Morocco. The founder of the current Alaouites dynasty is buried there, and it is the source of the dynasty. Old caravan routes that led from Rissani to Tombouctou across the Sahara desert are well known.
We travel on through rugged territory until we reach Merzouga, where our caravan of camels is waiting for us. Take a camel ride over the dunes of Erg Chebbi to see a beautiful sunset. Later, we make our way back to our hidden camp in the Sahara desert. Savor a delicious meal outside while listening to the soothing sounds of local nomads beating their drums all night long.
Meet your driver and get ready for another exciting and adventurous day after getting early to see the sunrise and traveling back to Merzouga village by camel or jeep. Cross the cratering massifs on the Anti Atlas Mountains' northeastern slopes and head toward the village of Nkob, which is where the fabled Draa Valley drive begins.
Travel through a number of mud-brick settlements dispersed throughout the valley, arriving at Agdz by mid-afternoon. The word Agdz means "resting place" in Berber, and it was originally a stopping point for ancient camel caravans traveling from Marrakech to Timbuktu through the Sahara desert in North Africa.
From here, continue to Ouarzazate and stay the night at your hotel.
After breakfast, take a tour of Ouarzazate's movie sets and studios, which are known as Africa's Hollywood. After that, visit the Ait Benhaddou Kasbah, which has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site since 1987. More than 20 movies have used this setting as a backdrop, including popular movies like "Gladiator," "Indiana Jones," and "Lawrence of Arabia." Enjoy taking a walk while you observe the traditional Moroccan architecture that is used to build Kasbahs.
After that, we travel through the Tizi n'Tichka pass and the High Atlas Mountains to arrive in Marrakesh. We stop for lunch in the beautiful Atlas Mountains and continue our journey to Marrakech. Your 5-day desert excursion from Marrakech to Erg Chigaga will end at a spot of your choosing in Marrakech.
