Two hours west of Marrakech on the Atlantic coast is the charming seaside town of Essaouira.
This city includes an offshore set of islands that are frequently windy, a fishing port, a 10-kilometer long sandy beach, and a walled Medina with stunning Portuguese architecture.
Start your affordable day trip to Essaouira from Marrakech at 8:00 AM with a shared pick-up from your hotel or riad. The trip begins with a brief coffee break in the town of Chichaoua, after which it continues on to Essaouira. When you get there, you can either go around the city on your own or hire a local guide for a little extra money.
If you opt for to follow the guide, you will reach the Skalla, a bastion southeast of the Medina. Explore the Medina's narrow lanes, where you can hear the appealing sounds of Gnaoua music everywhere you look. Watch as expert artisans create beautiful thuya wood crafts. Next, you can continue your exploration by going to the fishing port, where you can watch local fishermen selling their recently caught seafood. After some downtime for a seafood lunch and possibly a beach walk, the trip back to Marrakech starts.
Stop along the way at a local Berber women's cooperative that processes Argan oil, also known as the "liquid gold." The inexpensive outing and day trip to Essaouira come to an end with a drop-off at your lodging or Jamaa Elfna Square, Gueliz.
